Weather Stations and Their Role in Industry and Safety

Use of Weather Stations in Industrial Areas

Weather stations are widely used in industrial zones and factory premises. Data on weather conditions such as wind direction and wind speed can help predict environmental nuisances like odor or noise pollution. This enables early anticipation of potential environmental complaints.

Contribution to Risk Assessment

Data from weather stations also provide input for assessing specific risks. For example, is it safe to perform emission measurements and sampling on a platform 20 meters high near a chimney when wind speeds reach force 5 or higher?

Safety and Escape Routes

When it comes to safety and risk, it’s essential to know the escape route that is perpendicular to the wind direction. In the event of a gas alarm or fire, the safest escape route is preferred. To visualize wind direction clearly, wind socks are often used.

Measuring Wind Speed

There are various ways to measure wind speed. In safety-critical work (such as working at height or crane unloading), reliable and accurate measurement is vital. In such cases, the conventional cup anemometer is the best option. The rotor with cups rotates at a certain frequency, which is converted into airspeed – a very simple principle. The 3-cup anemometer is essentially the standard for measuring wind speed. This sensor type performs very accurately at high speeds and in turbulent conditions. Even when the wind is not flowing perfectly horizontally, these sensors still provide reliable measurements.

Impact of Precipitation and Condensation

The impact of precipitation and condensation on cup anemometers is minimal. Rain and moisture barely affect measurements, and snow typically slides off due to the mechanical movement of the cups and rotor.
