Grimm Aerosol Spectrometers Used in Aerosol Research for COVID-19 Measures
Origin and Behavior of Aerosols
Recently, interest has grown in the origin and behavior of aerosols in indoor environments. More specifically, the effects of ventilation in combination with air purification systems on aerosol distribution and concentrations. Understanding aerosol behavior, as well as the effects of air filtration and/or purification systems in the field, can provide insights into how indoor activities can be organized safely while minimizing energy loss.
Large-Scale Field Experiment in the Netherlands
A large field experiment was conducted in the Netherlands to assess the concentrations and size distributions of aerosols in a large indoor sports and fitness center. The effects of a custom-made innovative air purification system were also evaluated in this field test. The entire test was conducted during the height of the COVID-19 restrictions. Many details had to be taken into account, including extensive preparation for the field test itself.
Use of Laser Scattering Aerosol Spectrometers
Laser Scattering Aerosol Spectrometers (LSAS) from Grimm Aerosoltechnik were used to measure particle size distributions with high time resolution. This included measuring particle emissions from athletes’ breathing. During the sporting activities, small sensors were deployed to measure PM concentrations at various heights. The Grimm Aerosol LSAS was also used as a reference device to verify the performance of these sensors.
Research Collaboration
The study was carried out by researchers from the Built Environment and Industrial Design faculties at Eindhoven University of Technology in collaboration with Sportinnovator and PlasmaMade B.V.
Involved Organizations
The municipality of Eindhoven, Isala Hospitals, Go2Sure, NL Actief, NOC*NSF, and multinational organizations Ansys and the Avicenna Alliance for Predictive Medicine were closely involved in the study.
Publication of the Study
More details and findings from the study will follow upon publication of the scientific papers.
