Measuring Greenhouse Gases – The Role of FTIR Analyzers

Extensive research is currently being conducted on greenhouse gases and their environmental impact. Well-known greenhouse gases include H2O, CO2, CH4, NH3, N2O, and the formerly widespread group of CFCs. These studies focus on measuring greenhouse gas emissions and exploring storage solutions for CO2.

The Importance of Suitable Measurement Cells

Greenhouse gases have the ability to absorb light in the infrared region. This property is utilized in determining gas concentrations. For research purposes, we often use Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) analyzers, which are capable of tracking multiple gases simultaneously and over time.

FTIR Analyzers in Various Research Applications

To obtain representative greenhouse gas measurements at the sampling point during online gas analysis, it is essential to use measuring cells that perform well at elevated temperatures. Condensation or contact with liquid can result in losses before the actual measurement takes place.

Gas Concentration Analysis and the Role of Calcmet Software

In various studies on industrial emissions, livestock farming, and agricultural applications, an FTIR analyzer provides an excellent solution for determining gas concentrations. These analyzers are typically equipped with a heated gas cell operating at 50 °C or 180 °C. Combined with a heated sampling line, measurements can be carried out above the dew point to prevent losses caused by condensation or contact with liquids.

The Relevance of FTIR Analyzers in Environmental Research

Gasmet Technology's FTIR analyzers are equipped with Calcmet software, which logs all raw spectral data for further analysis. This ensures the analyzer is not merely a “black box” delivering gas concentrations, but a tool that provides full spectral information for a more complete and transparent gas matrix evaluation.

With these advanced FTIR analyzers and their corresponding software, researchers gain deeper insights into greenhouse gases and their effects—supporting the development of effective emission reduction strategies and sustainable environmental practices.
