Dust Monitoring

dust monitoring

Measuring dust and particles is a specialism in itself. In practice, representative dust measurement is often more complex compared to measuring gas concentrations. Particles behave differently in air and gas flows, meaning concentrations are not the same at every point in a space or duct.

Supplying Equipment

For many decades, we have been supplying certified laboratories with the necessary sampling equipment for conducting permit measurements and reference measurements for dust determination in emissions. We also offer suitable reference systems for ambient air monitoring.

Various Application Areas

dust monitoringApplications for online dust monitoring and detection are diverse. Direct-reading dust measurement instruments can be used for:

  • Emission monitoring;
  • Process control;
  • Filter breakthrough detection;
  • Workplace monitoring;
  • Room surveillance;
  • Ambient monitoring (fine dust);
  • Air quality measurements;
  • R&D applications.

Measurements

Dust concentrations are usually expressed as mass per unit of volume. Online dust measurements or detection systems are indirect measurements. These direct-reading sensors do not actually measure mass, but derive mass concentration from the acquired signal.

A Tribo Probe

A commonly used method of dust detection in processes and emissions is through a triboelectric probe. We supply tribo probes for applications such as filter breakthrough detection, and we can also install QAL1-certified tribo probes for CEMS systems.

Fine Dust

For indoor monitoring, there are excellent optical sensors with transmitters available. Ravebo can also maintain and calibrate these sensors and systems. These systems monitor and measure fine particulate matter concentrations in the environment.

Light Scattering and Optical Particle Counting

A highly accurate online method of fine dust monitoring is using systems based on light scattering and/or optical particle counting. For environmental and air quality measurements, we recommend 31-channel spectrometers from Grimm Aerosoltechnik. These are available in both portable and stationary versions. For outdoor or process measurements, proper sample conditioning is required before reaching the measurement cell. For this purpose, we mainly use three methods: dilution, heating, or drying using a Nafion® permeation dryer. For the most precise fine dust measurements, we supply and maintain systems certified to be equivalent to EN12341 for fine particulate matter.
