Advanced Spectrometry for Pulmonary Research and Education
Research into Exposure to Cigarette Smoke
For research into exposure and the effects of cigarette smoke in patients with chronic lung disease (COPD), a team of five researchers was looking for a spectrometer with a very short response time and broad applicability for various studies.
Eventually, the decision was made to purchase a so-called Wide Range Aerosol Spectrometer from the manufacturer Grimm.
Aerosol Measurement in the Submicron Range
The complete system consists of two instruments. For measuring aerosols in the (sub)micron range, spectrometer model 1.109 was chosen. This instrument can perform a scan every 6 seconds of particle counts in the air between 250 nanometers and > 32 micrometers, distributed over 31 particle size channels.
Measurement of Nanoparticles
For measuring nanoparticles, the so-called SMPS+E is used. This allows a scan to be generated of high concentrations of nanoparticles in the air distributed over 159 particle size channels. The full system can therefore quickly create a detailed picture of the airborne particle spectrum ranging from 1 nanometer to >32 micrometers.
Flexible and Universal Applicability
Due to the flexible and universal applicability of the instrumentation, it will also be used for educational purposes. The spectrometer model 1.109 will also be applied for online fine dust measurements and workplace monitoring.
